This week Jason taught on Matthew 18:1-4. He began by explaining that the kingdom of heaven is the place where God rules and that we are already a part of it as Christians. It will continue forever, so we want to be great in that kingdom. But what makes us great in the kingdom of heaven is not what we would expect. In the kingdom of heaven, it is humility, being like a child, and being a servant are what is most important. Instead of trying to be better than others to be great in the kingdom of heaven, we simply have to recognize who God is and how much greater he is than us.

This leaves us with two challenges. The first is that we need to change our attitude. We need to stop trying to be better than others and recognize that we need God even more than a small child needs their parents. The second is that we need to serve others and care about the needs of others before our own needs. This week we should try and do something to serve someone else like being a friend to someone who needs a friend.

This week Trent spoke on Matthew 8:28-34 as well as Psalm 8. In these passages Trent talked about how man is more valuable than animals. It was okay for Jesus to send the demons into the pigs, because the pigs are not nearly as valuable as animals. This really upset the people of that area, because they made their living raising pigs. They did not want to lose their valuable possessions (which they were not supposed to have according to Jewish law). They did not want Jesus to make any changes to their lives, even if he was able to help two men to be freed from being demon possessed.

In our lives we need to be willing to let Jesus make big changes. We cannot be scared and just be comfortable with the way things are. Instead we need to invite Jesus to make changes that may change everything in our lives.

This week Nick spoke on Proverbs 13:20, "He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." and Proverbs 27:6, "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." Both Proverbs deal with how friends can influence us. The first Proverb deals with how our friends can change the way that we behave. If we have friends who pressure us to do foolish things like the girl who tried to jump over the stream in the video, then we will be much more likely to do stupid stuff. Our friends can even pressure us to do things that are wrong and that will hurt us. We need to have wise friends who will help us to do the right thing.

As the second verse talks about how we need friends who are willing to tell us when we are doing something wrong. The criticism might feel like a wound at the time, but in the end it will be better than just having someone say nice things about us that they do not really mean. When someone "kisses" us or "kisses up" to us, they are saying nice things about us, even though they do not really care about us. It feels better to be around these sorts of people sometimes, but in the end we need the influence of someone who can criticize us and help to make us better. As a result we need to think about what kinds of friends we have, how we can get friends who will be good influences on us, and how we can be a good influence to our friends.

This week Trent spoke on Proverbs 12:1 which says, "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid." In this passage we learn that we need discipline in our lives. Sometimes we like to ignore it when a person corrects us, because we want to keep doing whatever we are doing. Instead of ignoring correction, however, we should listen to it. Trent gave the example of the kid who is told never to go into the wilderness because there are bears. It might seem like fun to go out to the wilderness, but if the kid does not follow the rules then he might get killed by bears. Clearly, we need to follow rules that are for our benefits. In a similar way, we feel pain when we do something like grab a hot teapot to tell us to stop burning our hands. Discipline is a great way for us to learn what we should do in our lives, and it helps us to avoid doing things that are stupid. In taking discipline from someone else we will make better decisions and will be able to follow God better.

This week Trent spoke on Proverbs 10:12. This verse talks about how hatred stirs up strife, but love covers wrongs. Trent talked about how we have two choices when someone does something that wrongs us. We can get mad and hate the person who did it, or we can love them and forgive them. Trent talked about how his sister used to come into his room and play with one of his toys that he did not really like anymore. He would get upset about the fact that she went into his room without his permission. He had a choice, to get mad or to forgive his sister. In that situation he should love his sister and forget the wrong that was done to him. In this coming week we are going to face this same sort of choice. We can get mad when someone does something that bothers us, or we can love them and forgive them instead. We should all try and forgive people this week rather than hold things against another person.

This week Trent spoke on Joshua 1:6-9. In this passage God told Joshua many times that he needs to be strong and courageous in the face of the task that God set before Joshua. Joshua was supposed to lead the people of Israel to conquer the land, even though there were many opponents that would try and stop them from living in the land that God had promised to the people of Israel. For the eighth graders who are about to go into high school, the transition to high school can be scary. High schoolers can seem like big, scary people, and we might be afraid that they will not really like us. Still, God wants us to all be strong and courageous. As new freshman there are many things that God wants you to do as you are in the new land called "high school." You will have a big part of the next group; you will be at least 25% of the total group. As a result you can help take leadership and welcome other people to the group. You will not be alone in the transition either because God will be with you as he promised Joshua in addition to all the other eighth grade students. There are many great things that God wants to do in your life while in high school, so as you go into high school you need to be courageous and allow God to work through you and teach you. For those staying in middle school, you need to courageously welcome in the new sixth graders and help them to make a good transition into the group. God wants you to be working hard to serve him as well, and that will take courage and strength.

20. Wear a red vest, stand in front of a fancy restaurant, when cars pull up take the keys and the $5 tip.
21. Take that fancy car you just got, put a big sign in the window that says "for sale, $5", and wait.

This week Trent Lewis spoke on the story of Peter and John healing a beggar who could not walk. The story is found in Acts 3. In the story this beggar is always asking for money as people enter into the temple area, but he is ashamed as he asks for money. Peter and John have compassion on this man and take the time to actually look him in the eyes. After they do this they heal the man and help him to walk. The man rejoices and praises God. In our lives we often think that God can only do small things like help our aunt's friend's cat. Instead of just praying for these small things, we need to expect God to do big things. We need to expect God to change our lives when we pray. We should pray for God to make us better Christians. For each of us that will mean praying for him to change us in different ways depending on what things we need to work on to be better Christians, but this is something that we all need to be praying for.

This week Trent Lewis spoke on Acts 2. He talked about Pentecost which was when the Holy Spirit came to Jesus' disciples. When the Holy Spirit came he came with a tongue of fire and people spoke in many different languages. Since people had gathered from all over the world, people were able to hear the gospel in their own language. As people saw these incredible miracles and signs, they came together to hear what was going on. Then Peter gave a presentation of the gospel. Three thousand people became Christians on that day. In our group we have a big event coming up called grad night. At grad night we probably won't have tongues of fire, but we will have exciting games, a concert, golf 'n' stuff, and all kinds of fun to draw people in. After people come to grad night we will have the opportunity to present the gospel to them. Trent also talked about how these new Christians came together and formed a very close community in which they shared all aspects of their lives together. They shared meals and even their possessions together. In our middle school group we need to have a good community as well. That means that when the new fifth graders join the middle school group we need to be welcoming to them. We need to show them that we want them to be a part of the group and help them to feel welcomed. We can all remember a time in which someone welcomed us, like Trent shared about when he talked about the guy who helped him with his locker in middle school. We should all try and be like that person and help the new sixth graders to feel welcomed into the group.

This week Trent spoke about prayer and fasting. He taught on Matthew 6:16-18 which talks about the need for there to be time spent alone with God. We should not try to show off how holy we are; instead we need a very personal and close relationship with God. An important part of relationship is time that is spent together, but not with any other people. Trent talked about how it is important in a dating relationship to have certain times where you are alone just the two of you. With God it is the same way. We need time that we just focus on prayer. Trent challenged us to set aside a special time this week in which we can pray to God. It might include some form of fasting in which we give up something to help us to have more time to focus on God. Maybe that means giving up eating for a day or giving up some form of electronics like text messaging or television. Instead of doing these things, we can spend some time with God beyond what we normally spend with God.

This week Nick spoke concerning the question of what happens to people who have never heard the gospel. He talked about three different ways that people have attempted to answer the question. First many people have suggested that if a person does not hear the gospel then they will go to hell and have no real chance of being saved. He talked about verses like John 14:6 and Acts 4:12 which talk about salvation being through Christ alone to support this idea. The second idea that Nick discussed was "middle knowledge," which basically means that God knows the answers to "what if..." questions. According to this view, if a person would have believed if they heard the gospel then they will be saved. To support this idea Nick talked about Matthew 11:20-24 which pronounces judgment on many of the cities in which Jesus did his miracles. Jesus suggests that it would be better for other cities that were wicked on judgment day because they would have repented if they had seen the miracles that Jesus was doing. Lastly Nick explained a third option in which people are responsible for whatever light that they have. Romans 1:18-21 talks about how we all have the ability to know a number of things about God and are without excuse if we choose to ignore him. This means we are all responsible to follow God to the best of our ability with the information that we have. Nick explained that he preferred this explanation, but that there is good reason to think any of these three options. He then explained that any answer to this question must keep in mind God's justice which requires that sin be punished and that things are fair as well as God's mercy that forgives us for our sins. Nick concluded that no matter how we answer this question we should still spread the gospel because that is what is commanded for us to do. We also know that if they hear the gospel and receive it that the person will be saved, whereas we do not know otherwise. Nick also told a story regarding a kid walking along a beach who saw a number of starfish that had washed up on shore and as a result they were dying. He began to throw them back out to sea in order to save them. He knew he could not save them all, but he also knew that he could save one. We might not be able to reach everyone ourselves, but we can still reach one person, and that much is worth the effort.

This week Trent spoke about the question of why God was more active in Bible times than he is today. Trent gave two answers to that question. First he explained that God works differently in different times. God has a grand plan, and his plan involves many time periods where God does not reveal himself as clearly to his people. As Trent showed us there is a four hundred year gap between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament. In that time period, God seemed like he was less active than he had been in previous times. For us today, it has been almost two thousand years since the last time we had more books added to the Bible, and it seems like God has been less active than he was in the past. This is all a part of the plan that God has for mankind. The second answer that Trent gave was that God is, in fact, still active in the world today. When Jesus left he said that he would send something even better than himself, he would send the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is active in the life of believers across the world. He does miracles today, in leading people to Christ and in helping people to follow Christ better. Since God is still working, we need to still be seeking to have him work in our lives. He will change us from the inside out if we allow him to work in us.

This week Jason taught middle school about how we can know that God exists. Although there are many ways that people have tried to prove that God exists, the one we focused on has been around for thousands of years. One of the more recent ways of explaining the argument goes like this:

1. Everything that began to exist has a cause.

2. The universe began to exist.

3. Therefore the universe has a cause.

Basically this cause must be God, so God must exist. While it is still hard to understand how God could exist throughout all time, it is easier to think that God exists throughout all time because he is different from the physical universe. The Bible also tells us that God existed from before the beginning of the universe, and this argument helps us to understand why we should believe that God existed before the beginning of the universe. In spite of this argument and many other reasons for believing in God, we still need faith. Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Even with this and other arguments we do not see God; we still need to have a belief in things that we do not see. We still need to be willing to do something scary and sacrifice for the sake of God. That might mean sharing our faith which can be an intimidating experience. With the argument about the existence of God, however, we have one more thing we can try and explain to our friends that do not believe in God. Also we can give up our time and our comfort to do something for God. We can spend our time reading the Bible, which at least at first might seem like a chore rather than something that we are excited about doing. Over time, we should want to read the Bible, but at first this might be a bit of a sacrifice of our time. In sharing our faith and reading our Bible we can continue to develop our faith and live out the faith that we have.

Hume Lake is one of the two camps we do each year and Camps are one of the most important things we do each year. They have activities that can only be experienced at Hume; some high energy games and plenty of chances for students to simply enjoy a relaxing weekend away with their friends. Camp is not only full of different fun activities that create memories, it is also a place where you are challenged to consider who God is and how that changes the way we live.

This week Trent continued our series on love by discussing 1 Corinthians 13. In this chapter Paul defines what love is and tells the Corinthians how to best show love to others. First Paul establishes that love is far more important than just about anything else that we can do. It is greater than speaking in all the tongues of men and of angels and greater than faith that can move mountains. Of course these things are great, but without love there is no purpose in having them. Then Trent talked about how there are sixteen different things that Paul uses to describe love. There are eight things that Paul says love is and eight things that Paul says that love is not. Trent challenged us to think of a person that we love, such as our mother, and try to work on not doing one of the things that love is not and on doing one of the things that love is. If you cannot remember what you chose to work on reread 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 to remember what are the different aspects of love. Perhaps this week you will try to avoid being resentful (keeping a record of wrongs), and try to rejoice more with truth (which includes being more honest). Maybe you chose to work on some other aspects of love, but try and remember to do them this week.

This Sunday Trent taught on the story of David and Bathsheba. In the story, David sinned greatly by sleeping with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah. David tried to cover up his mistake, but instead of being able to cover up his sin, he decided to murder Uriah. It all began when David decided not to go to war with Israel like kings were supposed to do in that time. Instead of doing his duty and protecting his country, David decided to relax. We do not really know why he did this, but we know that before he began to fall into temptation to sin with Bathsheba, he had already started doing things wrong. In our lives, we also need to make sure that we do not begin with doing little things that are wrong, because that opens the door for further temptations. Also, whenever we do sin, we should immediately confess our sins rather than attempting to hide them. In hiding his sin, David eventually murdered someone, and he still eventually got caught for his sins. He needed to repent earlier, so that he would not have continued to sin. In our lives, we should confess to all of our sins immediately rather than attempting to hide them, because we can never
actually hide our sins from God. God will ultimately punish us, even for the sins that we think that we have hidden, so it is best to repent immediately to keep ourselves from sinning any more.

This week our very own Nick Ranieri spoke to us concerning dating relationships. He shared a bit of his dating history, and offered some good advice for middle school students regarding dating. His advice was to wait until after middle school to get into a dating relationship. Nick also had excellent and Biblical advice on how to best treat persons of the opposite gender while still in middle school. His advice to young men, which is coming from 1 Peter 3:7, is that men should honor women. This means treating other women like you would want your sister to be treated by other men. You cannot treat a woman as if she is just something nice to look at because that dishonors her. His advice for young women was based on 1 Peter 3:3-4 and that their focus should be on becoming a good and mature person rather than focusing only on outward appearance. This means that women should focus on becoming the sort of woman who has a good personality, rather than merely good looks. Their character should be their focus rather than appearance. In addition, Nick advised young women to make sure that they date good guys rather than immature guys. Girls need to be picky about who they date. Finally, and above all, everyone should also make sure that they keep serving God as their focus rather than just trying to please themselves.

This week Trent taught on what it means to love according to the Bible. He looked at John 15:9-14. In these passages Jesus makes it clear that love is not just about the emotions that we feel. It is not about going up to our room and crying like the three-year old girl did, because she loved Justin Bieber. Instead, love is about sacrifice. Jesus gives the best example of love for us when Jesus dies on the cross. We should have that kind of love, sacrificial love towards others, rather than simply having dramatic emotions towards others. This means that we need to be willing to focused on how we can do acts of service towards other people, rather than focusing on these emotions.

This week in MSM we had the privilege of having guest speaker, Bill Stamps. Bill is a part time missionary and teacher at a theological seminary in Ethiopia. He shared with us his heart for the country of Ethiopia and how much those people desperately need the Gospel. He shared with us a little of the Ethiopian culture by showing us various pictures of daily living, the Ethiopian money, speaking a little bit of their language, and various other things he has collected. Bill challenged us all to strongly consider and earnestly pray about a potential calling into the mission field. Bill discussed how there are many unreached people groups that have never heard about Jesus. Bill encouraged us to care for these unreached people whether that be through missions, money, or prayer. There are many people throughout the world, throughout California, and throughout Long Beach that need to hear about Jesus. Will we tell them?

This week Trent spoke about giving by looking at the passage Mark 12:41-44. In this passage, Jesus tells his disciples that a poor widow who put in two small copper coins into the offering put in something more valuable than the wealthy people put into the offering. That is because she sacrificed the little bit that she had to live on, while the wealthy did not really sacrifice anything that was particularly important to them. They gave from their abundance and still had an abundance, while she gave all she had. When we give, we should not just be giving something that does not requiree a sacrifice, which means that we should be giving up something that we wish we could have in order to give someone else something that he or she needs.

This week Trent talked about Psalm 139. In Psalm 139 we talked about how God knows us from the very beginning of our lives; from before we were even born. He knew us when we were in our mother's womb. He knows what we are going to do next before we even do it. In light of that, David invites God to search his heart and to know his thoughts. He asks God to show him what things he is doing that are wrong and to be led into doing the right thing. We should not try and play peek-a-boo with God, we should let him see all of the things that we are not proud of, because he can see them anyway. After we let him see it, we should also let God work on us and lead us in the right way. We have to want to change the things that we are doing that are wrong.

This week Trent spoke on Psalms chapter 1. We talked about how in order to follow God and not walk in the way of the wicked we must remain in the word. In the passage God will bless the person who remains in his word and that person will not follow the ways of the wicked. In our lives this means that we need to be reading our Bible. The Bible is the source of advice and counsel for us as Christians. We should always look to the Bible first when we are trying to figure out how to live our lives rather than asking friends who might not really know what is best for us. When we walk in the way of the Bible, we will be walking the right way.

This week Trent spoke on the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho. He talked about how the Israelites decided to follow God and walk around the wall as God had commanded. They were commanded by God to walk around the wall and to be silent. They obeyed God and on the seventh day he came through. God had promised that he would give them the land and that he would give Jericho into their hands if they obeyed his commands. They were obedient and the city's walls crumbled in upon themselves. Israel had taken the city. God had fulfilled his promises, even though Israel had to be patient. We also need to trust in God's promises for our lives and be patient even when things seem different than we would have expected. I'm sure Israel was a little confused by God's command to walk around Jericho, but when they were patient and followed God's command, God fulfilled his promise to them. We too need to follow God and wait for him to fulfill his promises.
